Report from Matt Strawn, Iowa GOP Chairman PDF Print E-mail

The Chairman's Report - August 27th, 2010

Branstad promises to be the state’s top salesman, personally visiting companies to sell Iowa’s opportunities. That’s a sharp contrast to Culver, who just piles on more government programs. Culver’s $1.7 billion I-JOBS program hasn’t created any long-term jobs. I guarantee you Gov. Branstad won’t be satisfied to sit back and get no results.

Election Day Countdown: 100 Days

Would you give up $1 per day to preserve our personal and economic freedoms under attack by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid?

Would you give up $1 per day to return principled conservative government to the people of Iowa and send Governor Chet Culver packing?

If the answer is YES ... we have 100 short days to send a message to Washington, DC and Des Moines, and I need YOUR HELP.

NEWS RELEASE

Ben Lange Beats Bruce Braley in 2nd Quarter

Disclosures Reveal Braley's Vulnerability in Iowa's 1st Congressional District

July 16, 2010

INDEPENDENCE, IA - Ben Lange, a rising conservative candidate in Iowa's 1st Congressional District, outraised the liberal Democrat incumbent Bruce Braley in fundraising for the 2nd Quarter, according to financial disclosures released yesterday. Lange raised $108,587 compared with Braley's $106,678.

The disclosures reveal a stunning disconnect between Braley and his constituents in the 1st District. Out of approximately 400,000 registered voters in the district, only six constituents contributed to Braley's reelection bid this past quarter. Braley was forced to rely instead on out-of-state donors to provide 88% of his support, thereby reopening the issue of outside influence in congressional campaigns.

Lange's disclosures, on the other hand, reveal a broad-based grassroots fundraising apparatus directly tied to the constituents and interests of the 1st District. In fact, Lange raised 85% of his funds from constituents inside the district. The disclosures also reveal that 96% of Lange's support came directly from individual donors, whereas Braley relied heavily on political action committees tied to Washington interests.

"The fact that Ben Lange, an inspiring conservative candidate, outraised a liberal incumbent in a conservative district who votes with Nancy Pelosi 98% of the time shouldn't be surprising," said Cody Brown, campaign manager for the Lange campaign. "This is a conservative district and voters, regardless of political party, are searching for a genuine conservative alternative to the policies being advanced by President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Congressman Braley. Thankfully, voters of all political stripes, including conservative Democrats, will have an authentic conservative alternative in Ben Lange come November. This is beyond politics, this is about the future of our country."

According to a Des Moines Register article published Thursday, July 8, 2010, State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald is one of only three State officials refusing to accept a 10% cut in pay.

"Almost all of Iowa's top executive branch officials took a pay cut last year, including some statewide elected officials, with three notable exceptions: Lt. Gov. Patty Judge, Secretary of State Michael Mauro and Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald. "

........................but what will Obama say come January.....reagan flags.jpg

Inaugural Address
West Front of the U.S. Capitol
January 20, 1981

This speech was delivered to the nation when President Reagan was inaugurated to his first term of office.

Senator Hatfield, Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. President, Vice President Bush, Vice President Mondale, Senator Baker, Speaker O'Neill, Reverend Moomaw, and my fellow citizens.

To a few of us here today this is a solemn and most momentous occasion, and yet in the history of our nation it is a commonplace occurrence. The orderly transfer of authority as called for in the Constitution routinely takes place, as it has for almost two centuries, and few of us stop to think how unique we really are. In the eyes of many in the world, this every-four-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle.

Mr. President, I want our fellow citizens to know how much you did to carry on this tradition. By your gracious cooperation in the transition process, you have shown a watching world that we are a united people pledged to maintaining a political system which guarantees individual liberty to a greater degree than any other, and I thank you and your people for all your help in maintaining the continuity which is the bulwark of our republic. The business of our nation goes forward. These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed-income elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people.

Idle industries have cast workers into unemployment, human misery, and personal indignity. Those who do work are denied a fair return for their labor by a tax system which penalizes successful achievement and keeps us from maintaining full productivity.

But great as our tax burden is, it has not kept pace with public spending. For decades we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children's future for the temporary convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals.

A MILLION Reasons Why Gronstal & Dems Stymie Real Education Reform PDF Print E-mail

Strawn: Time for Democrats to put our kids before their campaign cash

Des Moines, IA -  Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn today said that in the days following the unveiling of Republican public education reform initiatives,  leading Iowa Democrats have continued to demonstrate a stunning defense of the status quo and reflexive opposition to new ideas for improving Iowa's public education system.

This Tuesday, Strawn was joined by Republican legislative leaders in a news conference to outline the Iowa School House Initiatives, a series of bold educational reforms to set high academic standards, test students and teachers to ensure those standards are being met, and keep parents and taxpayers fully informed of on-going progress.

In an Associated Press article posted Wednesday titled "Gronstal rejects Iowa GOP education plan,' Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal flatly rejected the Republican initiatives and instead focused on raising teacher pay.

Strawn said, "When it comes to bold initiatives to reform our public educational system and focus resources on standards and accountability tools that will actually improve student performance, Republicans are the Party of new ideas and solutions while Democrats say NO and defend the status quo.

IOWA GOP ACTION ALERT

Energy Tax Disaster:  Congressmen Boswell, Braley, and Loebsack vote to raise energy costs

on Iowans by about $400 a year for Iowa families and cost Iowa jobs.

ACTION ITEM:  Call Senator Harkin, IMMEDIATELY, and tell him to vote

NO on cap and trade (HR 2454)!

You can reach his Washington, DC office at:  202.224.3254

You can reach him via email at:  http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?63-870-874-205696-2702

Last Friday was a dark day for our country.  Dark because the U.S. House of Representatives, with the support  of Iowa's three Democrat members, voted for energy legislation that will dramatically increase energy costs for  Iowa consumers and turn the lights out on Iowa's economy with staggering job losses.

Congressmen  Boswell, Braley,  and Loebsack all sided with California's Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman in  support of HR 2454, even though data from the Energy Information Administration and Congressional  Budget  Office show the bill will increase electricity costs in Iowa and most of the rest of the country (while actually  lowering them in Pelosi's and Waxman's home state of California).  Click here for the report.

In fact, with energy costs estimated to rise by $250 million a year in Iowa as a result of this legislation, that  equates to nearly $400 annually for an Iowa family of four.

In addition, research from the Heritage Foundation shows Iowa will lose nearly 18,000 jobs by 2012 if HR 2454 becomes law (this is in addition to the more than 90,000 Iowans currently out of work).  Click here for the report.

Higher energy costs for Iowa families and fewer jobs for Iowa workers.  Reps. Boswell, Braley, and Loebsack have a lot to answer for when they come home to face Iowa voters.

THANK YOU to Republican Congressmen Steve King and Tom Latham.  Thank you for standing up for Iowa families, Iowa farmers, and Iowa businesses in opposition to this economy-killing legislation.

Now, it is not too late to stop this terrible legislation from becoming a reality.  We need EVERY Iowan to contact Senator Harkin's office, IMMEDIATELY, and ask him to vote NO on HR 2454 (the cap and trade bill).

You can reach his Washington, DC office at:  202.224.3254

You can reach him via email at:  http://link.sc.states.gop.com/?63-870-874-205696-2702

Below please find talking points on this legislation from the Republican National Committee:

(click here for a link to the RNC's video on the energy tax)

The so-called "cap and trade" plan proposed by President Obama and Congressional Democrats is nothing more than a huge multi-billion dollar national energy tax that will hit almost every American family, small business and family farm.

  • President Obama and Congressional Democrats will tax our lights out -- families and businesses will face higher energy costs every time they flip on a light switch, start a car or delivery truck, or manufacture a product.

  • Various studies also show that between 1.8 million to 7 million jobs could be lost.

  • Those hardest hit by this massive tax will be the poor and middle-class who are already struggling to make ends meet in today's recession.

  • President Obama himself said on the campaign trial that if "cap and tax" were to pass families' utility bills would "necessarily skyrocket."

  • The American people want energy independence and a cleaner environment without a national energy tax.

  • Republicans have a better way - an "all of the above" approach that would lead to lower energy costs, more jobs, a cleaner environment and greater energy independence.

  • Republicans want to increase the use of all energy sources that will reduce carbon emissions, especially nuclear, clean-coal and renewable energy technologies.

  • Republicans want to increase environmentally-safe energy production to take advantage of abundant supplies of energy right here in America on remote lands and far off our shores.

  • Republicans would do all this while reducing frivolous lawsuits and encouraging Americans to conserve energy to preserve and protect our natural resources.

Members of the president's own party oppose his national energy tax scheme.

  • John Dingell (D-MI): "Nobody in this country realizes that cap and trade is a tax, and it's a great big one." (Rep. John Dingell, Subcommittee On Energy And Environment, Energy And Commerce Committee, Hearing, 4/24/09)

  • Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN): "And you also run the risk of taking jobs away and not actually solving global warming." (MSNBC's "Hardball," 3/25/09)

  • Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA): "I just don't think an economy-wide cap and trade works." (Gerard Shields, "La. Democrats key figures in federal emissions debate," The Advocate, 5/2/09)

  • Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA): "I believe this bill would create an undue burden on families who are already paying too much in energy bills..." (Gerard Shields, "La. Democrats key figures in federal emissions debate," The Advocate, 5/2/09)

•Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA): "Any way you do it, it hurts Pennsylvania, especially western Pennsylvania. I think cap and trade is bad policy." (Alex Isenstadt, "Cap and trade hits speed bumps," Politico, 4/27/09)

CALL Senator Harkin, TODAY, and help stop this legislation from becoming a reality.  YOUR voice can make a difference, so call Senator Harkin, NOW!

Our Plan for Jobs and Recovery PDF Print E-mail
Written by American Solutions
Thursday, 19 February 2009

Washington solutions of more money for more government, more power for politicians, more debt, and more bureaucrats will not lead to real growth in jobs and prosperity.

We need a clear and decisive alternative that creates jobs and rewards work, saving, and investment.

  1. Payroll Tax Stimulus.  With a temporary new tax credit to offset 50% of the payroll tax, every small business would have more money, and all Americans would take home more of what they earn.

  2. Real Middle-Income Tax Relief. Reduce the marginal tax rate of 25% down to 15%, in effect establishing a flat-rate tax of 15% for close to 9 out of 10 American workers.

  3. Reduce the Business Tax Rate.  Match Ireland's rate of 12.5% to keep more jobs in America.

  4. Homeowner's Assistance. Provide tax credit incentives to responsible home buyers so they can keep their homes.

  5. Control Spending So We Can Move to a Balanced Budget.  This begins with eliminating Congressional earmarks and wasteful pork-barrel spending.

  6. No State Aid Without Protection From Fraud.  Require state governments to adopt anti-fraud and anti-theft policies before giving them more money.

  7. More American Energy Now. Explore for more American oil and gas and invest in affordable energy for the future, including clean coal, ethanol, nuclear power and renewable fuels.

  8. Abolish Taxes on Capital Gains. Match China, Singapore and many other competitors. More investment in America means more jobs in America.

  9. Protect the Rights of American Workers. We must protect a worker's right to decide by secret ballot whether to join a union, and the worker's right to freely negotiate. Forced unionism will kill jobs in America at a time when we can't afford to lose them.

  10. Replace Sarbanes-Oxley.  This failed law is crippling entrepreneurial startups.  Replace it with affordable rules that help create jobs, not destroy them.

  11. Abolish the Death Tax. Americans should work for their families, not for Washington.

  12. Invest in Energy and Transportation Infrastructure. This includes a new, expanded electric power grid and a 21st century air traffic control system that will reduce delays in air travel and save passengers, employees and airlines billions of dollars per year.
